Field Trip

Butterfly walk on the morning of Friday, August 12

Cam Miller will lead a FREE butterfly walk on the morning of Friday, August 12, at the Audrey Carroll Audubon Sanctuary, beginning at 9:30 am. Friends and family are welcome to come, too. Consider this event as a definite, unless it is actively raining that morning. Wear long pants, sturdy shoes (preferrably waterproof), a bug net for your head (for the gnats), and bring water and a long lens. The purple thistle and ironweed should be in bloom. The address of the sanctuary is 13030 Old Annapolis Road, Mt. Airy, MD. You are welcome to go there at any time. If you have not been there before and would like to follow me, meet me in the parking lot of the Food Lion in New Market at 9:00 am. I have a white Subaru Outback and my cell number is 410-845-8205. No need to RSVP for this event, unless you are meeting me at the Food Lion. I won't wait there if no one needs me to lead them to the sanctuary.

Butterfly walk in the Audrey Carroll Audubon Sanctuary Aug. 24th 9 am

Cam Miller will lead a butterfly walk in the Audrey Carroll Audubon Sanctuary on Saturday, August 24, from 9-11 am. Bring water. Wear long pants and shoes that might get a bit grassy and mucky. Your longest lens is advised, although many of the butterflies will be up close. Please RSVP to Cam: cam.miller@comcast.net. Directions will be sent out a few days before the walk to all who RSVP. You can also RSVP for this trip via the Meetup Group.

August Field Trip -- Monocacy National Battlefield

The new date is August 4th.

Geoff Grant has arranged for a guided battlefield tour from 5:15-7:30 pm on Sunday, July 21. We will be lead by Ranger Georgia Etter, and, tentatively, we will tour three sites, the Best, Thomas, and Worthington farms with time for a short discussion and photography of each site. The tour ends at 7:30, which will allow an hour for photography of the battlefield at sunset (8:30 on 7/21). Members will need to be in a position to exit the park at 8:30, which is when it closes.

Family members are welcome to come with you on this field trip.

Please contact Geoff directly if you are interested in going. It is a chance to get some "insider information" apart from what we read on the historical markers at the sites. Geoff can answer any questions you have and will be in contact again with more information. Geoff's email is geoffgrant2010@gmail.com.

May Field Trip

May Field Trip

Cam Miller has offered to lead a field trip to Antietam on Monday, May 27, which is Memorial Day. The graves at the National Cemetery will be decorated with American flags. We will catch the early morning light there, and after photographing in the graveyard, do a photo walk in the town of Sharpsburg. We'll have a late breakfast at Bonnie's Red Byrd Restaurant afterwards.

Plan on meeting at 6:15 am at the Costco parking lot close to the gas pumps, where we can car pool. If you would prefer to meet at the cemetery, meet us at the parking lot across the road from the cemetery at 7:15 am.

There will be wet grass, so bring a change of shoes or wear boots, and perhaps something to kneel on for those low-angled shots. A wide-angle lens in addition to your regular lens might be helpful. Tripods are recommended. The gnats can be fierce in the morning, so a sweatshirt with a hood and drawstring or a bug net hat might be a lifesaver!

To RSVP for this trip, please email Geoff Grant on or before May 24 with your name, cell number, where you will be meeting the group, and if you are willing to drive. geoffgrant2010@gmail.com

Field Trip to Light and Creativity 2018

Members are invited to carpool together to the 2018 Light and Creativity Workshop sponsored by the Harrisburg Camera Club. This is the 8th year for the event, which will be held on Saturday, April 7, from 8 am to 5 pm. The $80 ticket price includes lunch, and a $50 gift card to Nations Photo Lab.

We will meet at the food court end of Wegman's in Frederick at 6:30 am. We should be returning to Wegmans by 6:30 pm. RSVP to Cam Miller at cam.miller@comcast.net. Please indicate if you wish to ride with others or are willing to drive others. It will take approximately 80 minutes to get there.

Only 200 attendees will be admitted to this event, and it is already half full. Here is a link to more information, including the speakers, the vendors, the lunch menu, and more. http://www.lightandcreativity.org/

To register, you can either mail in a check, as noted on the registration page, or pay by credit card at the bottom of the registration page. Tickets are non-refundable, but they are transferrable, in the event that you are not able to attend after all. Early registration is encouraged.

I hope to see some club members attend this big photography gathering!

October Field Trip

Cam Miller will be leading a fall field trip through the Audrey Carroll Audubon Sanctuary near Mt. Airy on Saturday, October 14.

We'll meet at 9:30 am in the parking lot of Linganore High School, which is much easier to find than the sanctuary itself. The address is 12013 Old Annapolis Rd, Frederick, MD. We can carpool over, or I will lead you to the sanctuary and show you where to park.

The sanctuary at this time of year offers plenty of opportunity for using a macro lens: dried milkweed pods and thistle exploding with seeds, dried goldenrod and grasses, lichen on fence posts, red berries and leaves, and perhaps webs. There is even a old, abandoned dairy as well as a pond. Cam will be giving some tips for using a macro lens or taking closeups with a point-and-shoot (often my preferred method of doing closeups).

If you prefer instead to look for wildlife (deer, rabbits, ground hogs, birds, etc.), bring a longer lens.

Bring water, a selection of lenses, your tripod or monopod (if desired), and wear long pants and comfortable footwear for walking through grass. Binoculars are always handy, too!

If you'd like to go to lunch afterwards, meet at the sanctuary parking area at 11:30, and we'll head for Milo's in New Market.

Currently there is no rain date, so please RSVP if you know you will be coming, by sending an email to Cam at cam.miller@comcast.net. If the field trip is going to be cancelled, she will email you as soon as she has made the decision, as well as post the cancellation in the club forum. But let's hope for good weather!
